Air Jordan Shoes: A Legacy of His Airness

Michael Jordan changed not only how the games were played in the National Basketball Association. He also radically altered everyone’s taste for sports sneakers. His Airness spectacular performance in the NBA made the Nike company decide to pick him as the shoemakers endorser and bearer of a shoe brand that forever changed the landscape in the basketball shoe industry.

The Air Jordan sneakers first came into existence in the mid-1980s, at a time when most basketball shoes were in clear white. The shoes came out in bold black color with red styling. Designed by Peter Moore, the Air Jordan I was unveiled in 1985. Since then, the Air Jordans became a household name. The signature sneakers became an instant hit, beating any other brand of shoes in the market. More than two decades later and after over 20 variations, the brand is still one of the most sought after sports shoes. Despite its prices, Air Jordans are always a first-choice among sneaker enthusiasts.

Interestingly, when the first Air Jordan sneakers were launched, the NBA banned them from the league. However, MJ continued wearing the shoes during the games despite the prohibition. He was fined $5,000 by the league each time he uses the sneakers. The fines were, of course, happily paid by Nike just to keep the shoes in the game and in the public's view. Jordan's classic performances plus the attention brought by NBA’s ban on the sneakers made the Air Jordans sales record soar up to the ceiling.

The first version of the Air Jordans line to use the"Jumpman" logo is the Air Jordan III. The word"air" was also placed underneath the jumpman logo. Meanwhile, MJ wore the Air Jordan VI for the Chicago Bull's historic win against the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1990-91 NBA Finals. It was also MJ’s first NBA championship. When Jordan joined the US Dream Team for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, he used a specially designed Air Jordan VII, which features his Olympic number, 9, released by Nike.

A number of Air Jordans were also launched by Nike due to the success of the brand. Different versions came out in the market such as the Air Jordan Flight, the Air Jordan Dub Zeros, Air Jordan Spizike, and many others. Apart from its popular name, the Air Jordans are very durable shoes. Using the patented Nike Air technology, the sneakers are also comfortable to wear. The old versions of the Air Jordans are made of plastic, while the newer editions are made of leather.

In honor of the man that brought huge amount of money to the company, Nike’s last pair of the sneakers is the Air Jordan XXIII, or Air Jordan 23, following Michael Jordan’s famous jersey number. The shoes bear Jordan’s signature. Also found in the shoe is the jumpman logo on the right tongue, while the number “23” is on the left tongue. This is also the first environmentally friendly Air Jordan shoe. Its soles, which bear MJ’s fingerprints, are made from recycled rubber.  A minimum amount of adhesive was also used in creating the shoes.
